Ambient User Experience is the Future of the Workplace
We recently talked about what ambient computing is and how you can expect ambient computing devices to start appearing in offices near you sometime soon. You might be asking how 'ambient user experience' comes into the picture, and it's actually a closely related concept; but where ambient computing focuses on the digital mesh of smart devices themselves, an ambient UX focuses on making the day-to-day tasks we complete easier and more pleasant – ideally without us even realising.
User experience as its basic level concentrates on ease and enjoyment of use – of a product, to perform a task or of a website, for example. An ambient user experience takes this a step further; the ease of use and enjoyment is extended to cross the borders of one product or one task, to the point where the experience seamlessly flows between devices. As the user moves – physically, across device or across the web – the user experience is maintained, without unpleasant interruptions.
In the real world, take the example of playing music on your mobile phone; when you enter your home, the music switches to your wireless speakers, or when you go into your car, it'd start to play through your car stereo system. On the web, that could mean the way you interact with a web app feels and works exactly the same way on a desktop as on a mobile device. And in an office, that could mean having all your enterprise data and applications available from anywhere – in your browser, on your PC or on your phone. The benefits go beyond usability, too - on average, a Fortune 100 company could boost their yearly revenue by over $2 billion with only a 10% increase in accessibility of their internal data.
Creating an ambient user experience in enterprise
An effective ambient user experience depends on the digital mesh – that is, the web of connected smart devices across your home, in your office and in the greater public area. For now, this is mostly limited to personal devices such as computers, mobile phones and Amazon Alexa or Google Home type devices. As the number of smart devices increases, the ambient user experience will improve; for your office, this could mean smart central heating or air conditioning, smart meeting rooms or even smart desk spaces. More of these devices results in your daily tasks and responsibilities becoming easier, without any extra effort on your part.
Now Assistant is an easy stepping stone towards building an ambient user experience in your workplace. Out of the box, Now Assistant integrates with all the smart devices in your office – computers, mobiles, Amazon Alexa and more. By consolidating all your data sources into one tool, the barrier to getting things done – whether that's finding out your PTO allowance, starting a meeting or keeping track of weekly sales figures – all but disappears. And with the power of artificial intelligence, Now Assistant learns how you work best and adjusts itself to you. Interacting with data and applications in the workplace will become effortless and seamless across any device, creating a true ambient user experience and changing the way we work forever.
